2021 Code of Ethics Revisions and Application to Practice

  • The Bicycle Factory 201 Front Avenue Southwest Grand Rapids, MI, 49504 United States (map)

Course Description:

Did you know that the NASW Code of Ethics was revised in 2021? There were two primary revisions related to self-care and cultural competence. The updates to ‘self-care’ acknowledge the secondary traumatic stress endured by social work practitioners as well as concerns with impairment that inhibits work. The update to ‘cultural competence’ changes the tenor of Standard 1.05 by defining competence in as a life-long journey where clients are experts. Revisions also require practitioners to act against oppression, discrimination, and inequities, while also engaging in critical self-reflection regarding personal biases. This workshop will examine how these changes apply to social work practice . Participants will develop strategies to infuse institutionally supported self-care and identify biases (personal & implicit) to influence disparities in services.
