Now that as a country we have endured over a year of a global pandemic, it appears Synchronous Telehealth Clinical Therapy is here to stay. Social Workers are still adjusting to providing services over streaming or phone-based platforms, while also trying to “catch up to” technology. With the experience of providing clinical services via Telehealth platforms over the past 18 months, are we confident we are still offering culturally competent and ethically centered Social Work practices and services from our homes? Especially for those Social Workers who are working with oppressed, stigmatized or underserved populations on any platform, they need to know how to recognize and understand microaggressions, technology literacy, and the power differential this may create in the therapeutic alliance. Currently, oppressed or minority population clients continue to navigate accessing quality mental health care, possibly from technology barriers to accessing services; especially now that healthcare providers are “more comfortable” providing services from their homes or from the telephone. This presentation will explore what microaggressions are, discuss Social Work ethics and technology in providing telehealth services, especially understanding the limits of telehealth synchronous clinical therapy. The presentation will also cover some of the basics for providing telehealth therapy, including when telehealth therapy is “not a fit.” This presentation will use case studies and allow ample time for questions and discussion.
