Course Description:
The success of antiretroviral therapy in suppressing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has extended the life expectancy of persons with HIV (PWH) living to ages similar to persons without HIV (PWoH). More than half of PWH in the US are over 50 years old, and this number will continue to increase over the coming years. Older PWH may be at higher risk for developing age-related comorbidities and cognitive decline. This talk examines changes in brain function and structure in PWH across the age spectrum. We will also explore the intersection between Alzheimer’s disease and aging within PWH, distinguishing HIV-related cognitive impairment from Alzheimer’s disease, and the relationships of current clinical trials examining the efficacy of recently developed Alzheimer’s therapies for older persons living with HIV.
