Trauma Bonding

Course Description:

Trauma bonding is defined as a strong emotional attachment between a victim and his or her abuser, formed as a result of the cycle of abuse. In trauma bonding, the victim develops a sense of loyalty and intense connection to a person who is detrimental to the victim’s overall wellbeing. Victims feel the need to remain loyal to their abusers all in the name of love. It is essential for providers to reframe survivors’ behaviors as a defense mechanism rather than weakness or social vulnerability. When we fail to understand trauma bonding and attachment it makes it hard to understand why the victim tends to defend, idolize and protect the abuser. This workshop will explore the seven stages of the trauma bonding cycle, discuss practical case scenarios, and provide attendees with tools for recognizing and addressing trauma bonds.
