Course Description:
to meet the need for social workers to have updated information, the INR Webinar “Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders in Children, Adolescents, and Adults” will describe in detail the major OCRD disorders, including Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Hoarding Disorder, Trichotillomania, Excoriation Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The heaviest focus will be upon OCD, which, when the symptoms are severe, can be one of the most disabling mental disorders. The presentation will address how normal procedural memories and six key core beliefs become exaggerated, distorted, and uncontrolled to produce the common symptoms and disability associated with OCD. OCD largely becomes a cluster of obsessional thoughts and compulsive actions that attempt to cope with excessive and overwhelming doubt. The differences between impulsive and compulsive behavior will be illustrated. Several types of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors will be described, including contamination, aggression, harm, safety, intrusive sexual and violent thoughts, scrupulosity, perfectionism, and symmetry.
