Course Description:
Personal isolation is a relatively common clinical problem encountered when working with neurotic patients that runs on a continuum of withdrawn states. Fairbairn and Guntrip have described this well in individuals with more severe schizoid disturbances. In this presentation Dr. Cooper will address the phenomenon where it has roots in Oedipal conflict, using his concept of the Oedipal virtual citadel. He will give clinical examples of transference-countertransference enactments/engagement highlighting aloneness and isolation that are characteristic of Oedipally oriented fantasies and defenses to spark discussion.
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Distinguish varieties of aloneness and isolation observed when working psychoanalytically.
Identify fantasies and defenses that protect some patients in the context of dynamic intersections of Oedipal conflict, withdrawn states, and interpersonal avoidance.
