Course Description:
Healthcare practices for most of history have been centered on negative emotions and behavior and the nature and treatment of mental disorders. In the last couple of decades, a major effort has been undertaken to change this focus to understanding positive emotions and their role in creating and maintaining good physical and mental health, developing resilience in coping with life’s challenges, and contributing to an overall state of happiness and positive well-being. The goal of this seminar is to provide healthcare providers with information on how the brain produces behavior, the nature of positive and negative emotions, how the stress response happens, how resilient people cope with the challenges of life, and how overall happiness and positive well-being can be learned and maintained to create a full and good life—for the provider, his or her family and friends, and the patients and clients that are served.
