Course Description:
Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, and Princess Diana all suffered from depression. But one does not have to be famous to suffer from what Churchill himself called the "black dog." Clinical depression is associated with a sense of gloom and hoplessness, and it affects many people -- famous or otherwise. The scientifically-based six-hour course, "Depression and Bipolar Disorder" examines causes, treatments, and cures for depression, examining how depression operates at both the psychological, hormonal, and cellular level. The course covers how depression affects heart disease, pain, mood, and emotions. It emphasizes the brain's predominant role in depression. It reviews drug and psychological treatments. The course covers the link between depression and suicide and examines subtypes of depression including post-partum depression, seasonal affective disorder, and substance-induced depression. Bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression, is associated with feelings of both exuberance and despair. Bipolar disorder can affect thinking, sleep, energy, and behavior. The course examines treatments for bipolar disorder and explains how this disorder differs from traditional depression.
