Course Description:

In collaboration with Sanford Behavioral Health, Harbor Hall, and MyMichigan Health, this presentation will provide an overview of the difficulties commonly encountered in diagnosing patients with eating disorders. The presenter will introduce this topic through case studies showcasing the nuances in diagnosing an eating disorder. Discussion will include physiologic and behavioral effects, resulting directly from starvation; the diagnostic criteria for various commonly encountered eating disorders, based on the 5th edition Diagnostic and Statistical Manual; and various clues that a covert eating disorder may be present.

Objectives:

1. Identify conditions that may be misdiagnosed as an eating disorder

2. Describe the physiologic and psychiatric manifestations of starvation

3. List clinical findings/behaviors that may be associated with a covert eating disorder
