Course Description:
The INR Webinar “Managing Stress and Worry” will focus on understanding and managing the variety of stress and anxiety conditions being currently experienced throughout the United States and North America. Many surveys have reported marked increases in reported symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in the past few years and these have spiked upward sharply during 2020 and 2021. The webinar will describe how survival behavior develops and thoroughly explain the psychological and physiological basis of anxiety and worry: the stress response. The benefits of the acute stress response and the mental and physical dangers of chronic stress will be thoroughly discussed. Practical techniques to develop resilience—the learned set of skills that that protects against stress and anxiety disorders—will be presented and demonstrated. There will be a strong focus on evidence-based strategies and treatments for both preventing and managing the current elevated levels of stress, including those resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Effective and practical strategies to manage stress will be described, including some “five-minute quick fixes” for high levels of stress, including paced abdominal breathing, music, and the mammalian diving reflex. Attendees will also learn about how to improve self-care and patient care through comprehensive stress management strategies for adults, adolescents, and children, including mindfulness-based stress reduction, body relaxation techniques, visualization, decision fatigue management, diet and exercise recommendations, and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Specialized treatments for people experiencing extreme traumatic stress will also be presented, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, exposure therapies, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) will be described.
