Course Description:

This presentation, “ADHD in Children, Adolescents, and Adults” will present up-to-date and relevant research information on ADHD for health and mental health professionals. The webinar will present the history of ADHD and the current understanding of the how gene patterns, epigenetic changes in gene expression, neurobiological alterations, and neurochemistry deficiencies combine with some lifestyle factors to produce the disorder. The multiple impacts of ADHD on people’s lives will be presented, ranging from those with severe disabilities to famous people who have had successful lives with outstanding accomplishments. The criteria for and methods of diagnosing what is often a complex disorder with many comorbid conditions will be described. This webinar will cover the development, course, and differing symptom presentations of ADHD through the progressive stages of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The evidence-based non-pharmaceutical treatments for ADHD will be presented, including dietary interventions, sleep management, therapeutic exercise, parent training, and behavioral management strategies for the home, school, and vocational settings. Finally, Dr. Howard will discuss the most effective treatments for children over age 6, adolescents, and adults with ADHD: a variety of stimulant and non-stimulant medications. This will include coverage of evidence-based short-term and long-term research outcomes, dosage patterns, possible adverse effects, and the risks for dependence and addiction.
