Course Description:
The CE training will combine on demand/self-study, fully synchronous, and in person components on site in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The course relates to social work competencies in ethics; pain and symptom management; self-care and addressing secondary traumatic stress, diversity, equity, and inclusion, implicit bias, and cultural competency.Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
1. Distinguish secondary traumatic stress (STS), vicarious trauma, compassion satisfaction (CS), self-compassion, and burnout
2. Examine the impact of direct and indirect trauma, intergenerational trauma, and shared-trauma among community members and social workers in Puerto Rico
3. Understand individual, family, and collective factors that promote resilience
4. Engage in a self-assessment of professional needs and strengths related to STS and self-care, and reflect results, and draft on plan of action
5. Engage with Puerto Rican social workers and community members to understand the current social, economic and environmental justice issues impacting the island
6. Explore the relationship between power, privilege colonial oppression and environmental justice in vulnerable communities in Puerto Rico
7. Understand the history, diversity and political status of Puerto Rico
8. Explore the African, Spanish and Taino Indian cultural influences on Puerto Rican ethnicity and identity
9. Explain the connection between mindlfulness and movement practices and pain and symptom management
10. Describe the ethical obligation of self-care practice and an understanding of collective care models
