Course Description:
Often survivors with a complex history of sexual abuse/assault experience distressing symptoms that mitigate their quality of daily living and hope for the future. The impact of repeated sexual traumas and abuse can lay the foundation for inflexible cognition, negative belief systems, and adverse bodily sensations in response to the traumatic events. While mapping out complex trauma histories may seem overwhelming for the client and the clinician, it can be therapeutic if done in a trauma-informed setting. Utilizing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a psychotherapy treatment originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b); survivors of complex trauma can build up resources, create coping strategies, and reduce the levels of disturbance associated with these traumatic events.
