Course Description:
Black women in the United States are a unique population and it is important to understand their social, ecological, and historical experiences in order to effectively support them in therapy. Presenters will provide attendees with information about the strengths Black women possess, the challenges they face, and the clinical implications of these common experiences. Themes discussed will include how Black American women may present in therapy, what are common alternative coping strategies, factors related to the under-utilization of counseling services and the resulting maladaptive stress-related behaviors that threaten their mental health. Culturally responsive strategies and treatment options are made for therapists who are interested in working with Black women.
