Course Description:
Research has shown transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, face multiple areas of discrimination and minority stress. By proactively working to create an environment that is affirming of all identities, we can help to decrease the related negative social, emotional, and physical outcomes that transgender and gender nonconforming individuals experience in non-affirmative environments. It is imperative that we as social workers present with a strong understanding of what these identities mean, as well as some of the unique challenges faced by these individuals.
With increasing numbers of individuals identifying outside the gender binary, it is likely most social workers will encounter clients or coworkers who identify as transgender and/or nonbinary. It is critical important that social workers are prepared to provide culturally competent and affirming care to nonbinary individuals. The presentation will provide a foundation so social works can begin to provide such care.
