Course Description:

This course concentrates on the practical aspects of the current world-wide emergency associated with the novel 2019 coronavirus. The course addresses the latest published and pre-print clinical aspects of the “COVID-19” coronavirus (aka SARS-2), its origins, clinical manifestations of the COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, differential diagnosis vs. influenza and other respiratory infections, current attempts at management with HIV-, malaria- and influenza-specific medications with the emphasis on evidence-based nursing care and long-term care. Dr. Katz will review the effectiveness of vaccines and boosters against various COVID variants. Identification of risk factors and vulnerable populations with the emphasis on inordinate rate of lethal pneumonia in the elderly as well as unusual features such as transmission from asymptomatic persons and the extended incubation period will be discussed. Special segment provides instruction on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PEP) and common mistakes in the selection, donning and doffing of PEP for nurses and other professionals who may become exposed to the novel viruses. Approaches to decontamination and large-scale isolation will be addressed. The seminar presented by Dr. Nikita B.
