Course Description:
Children are faced with an overwhelming amount of stress. As a result of this stress, children either indulge in unhealthy behaviors or become helpless. Building resilience in children encourages focusing on natural strengths, fostering hope and optimism, avoiding risky behaviors and improving self-esteem and self-perception. In particular, this course will focus on the seven “C’s” needed for bouncing back from adversity: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, Contribution, Coping and Control. Upon competition of this course, providers will acquire a better understanding of the importance of building resilience in children and will learn the proper use of therapeutic tools and interventions.
This workshop is relevant to the practice of Social Work because it provides professionals with the skills necessary to understanding and implementing therapeutic skills to help build resilience in children. Children are often faced with challenging and stressful experiences, and in return disengage and are unable to effectively cope. The rates of anxiety and depression in children continue to increase, and child-centered therapy is proven to be an effective therapeutic modality.
