Course Description:

This workshop will provide knowledge and skills for first-line responders, including social workers and direct care staff, to young people experiencing crisis in residential treatment settings. The focus will be primarily on recognizing the signs and stages of crisis, how to employ active-listening skills, and methods such as de-escalation, grounding and other interventions with young people experiencing trauma, mania, psychotic symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Topics will include proactive responses to mental health crisis, but these skills would be applicable to assisting anyone experiencing crisis symptoms.
