Course Description:
Marijuana (MJ) is the most commonly used psychotropic drug in the United States, after alcohol. According to National institute for Drug Use-Monitoring the Future survey, rates of past year marijuana use among middle and high school students have remained steady, but the number of teens in 8th and 10th grades who say they use it daily has increased. In particular with the legalization of Marijuana both for medical purposes as well as for recreation use in USA, teens are exposed to more MJ and currents substance use trends show that MJ use is increasing especially among teens. Teens do not see MJ as a 'harmful' drug. Marijuana also affects brain development. Research shows that marijuana use in teens may impair thinking, memory, and learning functions and affect the brains neuronal connections between the areas necessary for these functions thus MJ may have a negative effect on the developing teen brain and can be harmful.
