Course Description:
Compassion Fatigue differs from burnout in that burnout is caused by stress, while compassion fatigue is caused by caring. Other names for compassion fatigue include: vicarious traumatization; secondary trauma; and secondary PTSD. Compassion fatigue is the emotional residue that one carries as a result of working with clients exposed to trauma. Signs of compassion fatigue include a loss of energy, grief, anger, frustration, tardiness, depression, feelings of hopelessness, irritability, sleep problems, flashbacks, erosion of idealism, spiritual distress, and a shift in one’s world view. People vulnerable to compassion fatigue include mental health workers, addictions professionals, individuals with heavy trauma caseloads, counselors who deal with death and dying, individuals who work with traumatized children and sexual abuse survivors, medical professionals, fire fighters, and the clergy. Participants will leave this interactive, skill building session with tools that will enable them to prevent and overcome compassion fatigue.
