Course Description:
Our nation finds itself in an unprecedented moment in history where the leading cause of death in young people is no longer motor vehicle accidents but drug poisonings. The 2015 data by the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Center for Healthcare Statistics (NCHS indicates that this problem shows no signs of slowing, and in 2016 the CDC, following the lead of many other individual states, published prescribing guidelines for opioid pain reliever use for chronic pain. These lectures describe the factors leading to the current opioid epidemic, how it has evolved over the last ten years, and the 2016 CDC guidelines meant to stop it. Early recovery success through a new area of "Recovery Management is also presented, as well as some new understandings of the brain and addiction through neuroscientific discoveries.
