Course Description:
Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital is pleased to offer Jessi Holden’s presentation “A Weight Inclusive Approach to Health Care” on demand (asynchronous) virtually through the Mary Free Bed Education Academy.
Objectives:
By the conclusion of the lecture participants will:
1. Define weight-centric care and weight-bias including Implicit and explicit bias
2. Discuss the negative impact of weight-bias on patient care and overall health
3. Explain steps to take as a healthcare provider to become weight-inclusive
4. Define weight inclusive and share the Health at Every Size (HAES) Model of care
Applicable to Social Work Practice:
As health care providers we are taught to do no harm. Research in weight centric/biased care and its harmful effects has increased. Training on weight inclusive care is necessary to improve patient care, outcomes, retention, and experience. This differs from the normal healthcare paradigm in that it does not prescribe weight loss as a cure for health/disease and does not place all responsibility for health on the individual. We need to educate health care professionals on this important issue to improve quality of care and outcomes.
