Course Description:
In recent years, the those working in healthcare are becoming more aware of human trafficking as a public health issue. As a result, legislation was passed in Michigan requiring healthcare professionals to seek out education about human trafficking prior to renewing their licenses. This presentation will provide the required education.
The participants will learn what constitutes human trafficking, especially the difference between prostitution and sex trafficking. Records of survivors indicate that up to 88% sought healthcare while they were enslaved and the common reasons for seeking care will be presented. These survivors also experience long-term health consequences, many of which may require rehabilitative care. Once past or presently trafficked persons enter the healthcare system, it is essential that they are treated in a manner that will not retraumatize them. Therefore, it is important that healthcare providers understand the neurobiological changes that occur within the brain as a result of trauma and know how to utilize Trauma Informed Care. This presentation will provide education on how to appropriately respond to human trafficking within the context of rehabilitation nursing.
