Course Description:
Workshop #1 Description: Healing Emotional and Physical Pain through Yoga or Mindful Movement With Breath. This workshop aims to equip the social worker with additional tools to understand the human condition, assisting the clinician to be more effective by learning self-regulation skills via the yogic "mindful breath-movement-focus" techniques. The tenet is that the Mind/Body needs to be considered as a single, dynamic unit, and that principle should inform all aspects of the Social Work profession. Neuroscience research that supports the efficacy of yogic practices as a healing modality will be reviewed. Special precautions for person's who have survived trauma will be described. Application to pain conditions will be interwoven throughout this presentation. Workshop Description #2: Self Care and Experiential Applications of Yoga Practice, applies the key points from earlier sessions into a personal physical practice. This program will be a gentle yoga flow (continual movement with breath and focus). Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a floor-mat yoga class, and participants who prefer to remain seated will have a choice to engage in a Chair Yoga practice.
