Course Description:
Chronic pain can have real effects on day-to-day life and mental health. It can keep our patients from doing things they want or need to do. It can take a toll on their relationships and self-esteem, leaving them feeling angry, frustrated, anxious and depressed. This course will provide evidence-based knowledge on addressing and managing chronic pain. Topics include the role of behavioral health providers in chronic pain management and conceptualizing chronic pain from a biopsychosocial perspective. Strategies for communicating about pain, ways to work with children, adolescents and families and the relationship between child maltreatment and chronic pain will also be presented. All members of the health care team will benefit from presentations on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) strategies for managing chronic pain. The course will conclude with a panel discussion including expert faculty and chronic pain patients who will provide real-life examples of the impact of chronic pain and successful treatment.
