Course Description:
Patients with disorders of consciousness following a traumatic brain injury represent a very vulnerable patient population due to their inability to make medical decisions for themselves, as they are often intubated in the intensive care unit immediately following their injury. Many of these individuals are younger, and have not had discussions with their families/significant other regarding their wishes in the face of serious medical illness. Misconceptions about prognosis may lead to early withdrawal of aggressive treatment measures, based on decisions made with limited or potentially inaccurate information.
