Course Description:
Explicit bias is traditionally what we think about regarding bias. With explicit bias, individuals are aware of their prejudices and attitudes towards certain groups. Alternatively, implicit bias refers to the attitudes and stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. This presentation will identify common biases and differentiate between implicit bias and racism, and ways implicit bias impacts behavior. Strategies to address bias and providing equitable conversations when in health care settings will also be discussed. This course meets the current criteria for implicit bias training required in the state of Michigan.
