Course Description:

Social workers are involved in providing support and education to patients and families in order to help them adjust to living with chronic illness. They are also instrumental in helping them obtain access to the proper resources needed in order to deal with their medical issues. Inflammatory disease, of both an acute and chronic nature, can be a major source of disability and dysfunction leading to the need for extensive therapy and both short- and long-term care. The potential diseases that may result from the inflammatory response range from acute forms, such as osteoarthritis, to chronic systemic forms, which include cardiovascular disease, and disorders affecting the eyes, kidneys, and nervous system. This course on inflammation will help social workers understand the ramifications of living with inflammatory disease in order to help them increase their awareness of the specific needs of this patient population.
