Course Description:

This training addresses the importance of frontline healthcare workers receiving disability education. Although medical practitioners receive extensive training and education in their respective fields, curricula centered on how to engage people with I/DD are rare. The lack of training in this area leads to medical practitioners who are not aware of effective communication techniques specific to the disability community. Without the use of these techniques, clients with disabilities experience frustration, stress, and are often misunderstood. This training module utilizes not only factual data, but also stories from people with disabilities and their family members. After completing this training, participants will gain a better understanding of the importance of using these strategies when trying to communicate with individuals with disabilities and their families.
