Course Description:
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical method or a “guiding” process that seeks to bring forth and strengthen a person’s own motivation for change. It is patient-centered in that it is collaborative and fully respectful of the patient’s autonomy and preferences. The use of MI principles and practices helps people sort through their thoughts, ideas, and often ambivalent feelings about their current situation and possibilities for change. Participants in this course will learn a basic overview of Motivational Interviewing and communication inconsistent with MI principles. This presentation will discuss the spirit of MI and present the four core process, including techniques involved in each step.
