Course Description:

This course will be presented from both a Trauma Informed Approach and Survivor Centered Approach. I will link the logical (what is known) with the interpretative, my personal experience. Both are needed to understand the entire scope of what human trafficking is, and the negative effects it has on individuals, families and our communities. It is one thing to teach about what you think you know theoretically; however, nothing trumps the experience of living it. I have been trafficked; killed my trafficker and been to prison. Nevertheless, I have chosen to make something good out of the experience. I obtained my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. I obtained my MSW from the University of Michigan School of Social Work. I am currently a colleague and commission member of Governor Whitmer's Commission on Human Trafficking. I am the President of the Board of Directors of Sanctum House, a program that serves survivors of human trafficking in addition to other collaborations with agencies that also do this work. Clinically, I treat victim/survivors and help them understand what happened to them and why, and how to move forward. I also train a genre of professionals in the field of human trafficking to help them better understand how to recognize, help and protect victims who are trapped in this henous and de-humanizing system.
