Course Description:
It is well documented in literature that those who experience physical and sexual abuses, as well as other traumas, suffer from chronic pain conditions as well as multiple physical disorders and illnesses. There is a correlation between anxiety and other mental health issues and poor health outcomes, including pain management. However, when the primary method of pain management is pharmacological, patients are placed at risk for substance use disorder. Additionally, if pain is poorly managed due to withholding medication, these patients may seek relief through purchasing illegal substances. Health professionals can minimize these poor health outcomes by assessing from trauma and utilizing psychological and emotional interventions. Health professionals will gain knowledge on the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma and pain and utilizing a trauma informed approach to health care. Participants of this activity will be able to identify types of trauma, explain the effects of trauma and how this impacts the pain experience, and assessing for trauma to improve current symptom management practices.
