Course Description:
General Multiculttural course: This training will be largely based on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (2015) Quick Guide for Improving Cultural Competence. The purpose of this training intervention will be to provide resources and guidelines to help mental health clinicians develop practice and training competency to recognize that all individuals, including themselves, are cultural beings with worldviews that shape their attitudes, emotions, perceptions, and experiences. This will take place over 10 hours of asynchronous coursework through the easygenerator online course platform. Defining cultural competence and its rationale, describing how to develop cultural awareness, and overview of core competencies with major cultural groups and education regarding culturally responsive clinical care will be conducted with participants. The male privilege checklist (Deutsch, 2004) will also be done by participants. Participants will be given information on additional resources and websites to consult. This is an IRB-approved training study to assess efficacy among mental health clinicians who practice with rural clients and pre- and post-test surveys will be administered via Qualtrics to assess for improved knowledge, self-efficacy, and attitudes among mental health professionals.
