Course Description:
Purpose: To provide evidence-based strategies for screening and prevention of prenatal alcohol exposure to healthcare providers caring for women of reproductive age.
Goal: The goal of this course is to provide individuals caring for women of reproductive age with evidence-based information regarding the prevalence of alcohol use, the teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure, strategies for screening and prevention of prenatal alcohol exposure, as well as resources in Michigan for referral and treatment of pregnant women who are using alcohol and/or other drugs. The course is especially important for agencies and health care providers who care for Michigan's pregnant Medicaid population Target Audience: The target audience for this course includes health care professionals who provide care to pregnant women. These include: • Registered Nurses • Registered Dietitians/Nutritionists • Social workers • Physicians • Other health care providers • Certified Addiction Counselors (CAC) • Maternal Child Health Program Staff • Early Childhood Program Staff • K-12 Educators The course is specifically targeted toward staff in agencies contracted with Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) to provide services to pregnant women and their infants.
Course Description: This course is divided into nine modules. Each module (except the Navigation module) will have an introduction page listing the module objectives.
The course modules are: • Module 1: Navigation - 1 minute • Module 2: Course Introduction – 4 minutes • Module 3: Alcohol Effects on Mother and Infant – 10 minutes • Module 4: Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP) – 8 minutes • Module 5: Alcohol Cessation Programs – 7 minutes • Module 6: Intervention Tools and Programs – 10 minutes • Module 7: Stages of Change – 16 minutes • Module 8: Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) – 28 minutes • Module 9: Assessment – 5 minutes For the purpose of continuing education the following information is pertinent: No credit modules = 1, 8
