Course Description:
Because pharmacotherapy is a primary intervention used to treat patients at risk of suicide, this module explores how different medications can help patients with various kinds of underlying mental illness. The module begins by looking at medication management: the process of assessing patients’ various medications, helping them organize their pill regimen, and also being mindful of possible interaction or conflicts. Next, the module details the specific types of medications (and possible risks related to them) for various mental illnesses, like depression, psychosis, bipolar disorder and addiction. Last, the module explores how the complexities of these medications can compound when used with special populations ---children and adolescents, the elderly and women of childbearing age.
