Course Description:

Stress and burnout are significant issues in the healthcare professions. According to research one-third of nursing team members struggle with stress and burnout at the micro, meso, and macro levels of healthcare, requiring meaningful interventions to support them (Webster, 2019). Occupational stress is costly to the U.S. economy and accounts for up to 60% of sick-days in healthcare team members (Sallon, Katz-Eisner, Yaffe & Bdolah-Abram, 2017). Prolonged stress and burnout lead to physiologic changes contributing to physical and mental illness (Khamisa, Peltzer, Ilic & Oldenburg, 2016). Chronic burnout, a potential consequence, may result in cardiovascular diseases, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, feelings of dysfunction, and emotional effects such as substance abuse or gambling. This presentation will provide valuable information on the importance of reducing stress and ways to use mindfulness-based stress reduction strategies to improve health and well-being.
